High risk work licences, explained
Some jobs are dangerous enough that the law says you need a licence before you do them. That licence is a high risk work licence, often called a HRW licence or just a ticket.
What needs a licence
- Forklifts and order picking forklifts
- Boom-type elevating work platforms with a boom of 11 metres or more
- Dogging and rigging
- Scaffolding
- Cranes and hoists
- Reach stackers
- Boilers, steam turbines and reciprocating steam engines
How you get one
- You need to be 18 or older.
- You train and get assessed through a registered training organisation (RTO).
- When you pass, you get a statement of attainment. You then have 60 days to apply to the work health and safety regulator. In the Territory that is NT WorkSafe.
- The licence lasts 5 years, then you renew it.
- It is generally recognised right across Australia, so a ticket earned in Darwin works interstate.
Why it matters to employers
A business must not let someone do high risk work unless they hold the right licence class. Putting an unlicensed worker on a forklift or a boom lift can mean fines for the worker and the business, and trouble with insurance if something goes wrong.
A licence shows a person was trained and assessed. It does not show they are current on your particular machine. That is what a verification of competency is for.
